Mississippi Delta Blues sensation Big Jack Johnson has received three 2003 W.C. Handy nominations (the Grammys of the blues) for his 2002 release on M.C.
Records, The Memphis Barbecue Sessions. 2002 Grammy Nominee, Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds blows his super hot harmonica on every track. The nominations for Big Jack are for Traditional Male Artist,
Traditional Blues Album of the Year (for The Memphis Barbecue Sessions), Album of the Year (The Memphis Barbecue Sessions).
This marks 13 W.C. Handy nominations Big Jack has received since signing with M.C. Records in 1996. 2002 Grammy Nominee and M.C. Records artist Kim Wilson has also received a W.C. Handy nomination for Blues Harmonica player of the year. This marks his 5th Handy nomination since joining the label for his 2001 release, Smokin' Joint. Look for a new Kim Wilson studio CD from M.C. 2000, two legends of the blues got together to make some music, eat some barbecue and have a good time. The result is The Memphis Barbecue Sessions. This mostly acoustic release features Big Jack Johnson on acoustic and electric guitars as well as mandolin. Kim Wilson is on every cut and is playing the kind of harmonica that made Muddy Waters say "Kim's The best harp player since Little Walter." Kim Wilson shares a vocal and plays lead guitar with Big Jack on the song "Going Out Walking" The Memphis Barbecue Sessions, the fourth release from Big Jack Johnson on M.C Records, features Jackıs great blues song-writing as well as some of his favorite songs from Howlinı Wolf, Jimmy Reed and Elmore James. Most songs were done in one or two takes and there are no overdubs. Big Jack Johnson has lived and played in the Mississippi Delta all his life and brings thatexperience to this intimate and powerful CD.
Big Jack Johnson is a native of Lambert Mississippi and currently resides in Clarksdale Mississippi.
He first recorded in 1961 at Sam Phillipsı Sun Studio in Memphis. Big Jack gained national prominence in the late seventies as the singer, bass and guitar player in the critically acclaimed group the Jelly Roll Kings. He went on to record several solo records in the eighties and early nineties. Big Jack Johnson has appeared in the films Juke Joint Saturday Night and Deep Blues.
Big Jack Johnson signed exclusively with M.C. Records in 1996, he has since been recognized as one of the worldıs premier blues artists. Heıs been nominated for 13 W.C. Handy Awards,
three Living Blues Awards a NAIRD & AFIM nomination for Blues Record of the Year. He also won the Blues Record of the Year from Crossroads Magazine.
